Restoration and Protection of the Peat Ecosystem in Central Kalimantan
The Project Description
The overall project idea is to enable restoration and protection activities in Social Forestry Areas (village forests, community forests, customary forests) and areas where BOS Foundation has an environmental license in Mawas, Central Kalimantan. Overall, the project will mitigate climate change bythrough carbon removal through reforestation and avoided emissions through rewetting, fire prevention and conservation activities. This activity will support local communities in obtaining rights to their lands and natural resources and support them in gaining capacity and long-term funding to protect and restore the areas.

Developing the project as a carbon project will guarantee that the currently unfunded projects receive immediate funding and maintain financial stability in the long run. The project will be ensured through the Verra Verified Carbon Standard certification. Upfront investments to design and implement the project will be considered a part of the carbon payments. The overall aims of the project are as below:

-
Contribution to mitigation of climate change and protecting biodiversity through restoration and protection of the peat ecosystem.
-
Supporting local communities in obtaining rights to their lands and natural resources, and to gain the capacity to protect and restore these areas.
-
Certified emission reductions and removals through carbon crediting to ensure long-term sustainability (environmentally, socially, and financially) of the community-led forest management and to contribute to Ørsted’s carbon credit needs.

Climate change mitigation will be achieved through the below activities:

-
Rehabilitation of peat hydrology through community led blocking of drainage canals with dam constructions

-
Community-led reforestation on unproductive peat land with local tree species that attract wildlife and speed up natural regeneration.

-
Conservation through preservation and protection of primary and secondary forests through community-led forest patrolling to combat illegal logging, wildfires and other supporting activities.
